Cleaning House

Fri Nov 20, 2009, 1:41 PM
I decided to bring some organization to my gallery today.

I added a few folders to store my artworks. The titles are fairly self explanatory.

I'm not sure if the favorite links to my sketches will still work, now that I've moved things to the individual folders.

Onward!

  • Mood: Triumph
  • Listening to: Do You Wanna Date My Avatar (The Guild)
  • Watching: Do You Wanna Date My Avatar (The Guild)
  • Drinking: Cherry Bawls

deviantID

I'm an artist, interactive writer, Invertebrate punster (you don't like it, slug me), and an Amateur Meddler and Worrier (would be Pro, but I'm not getting paid to do it).

My age? I'm $29.95 plus shipping and handling.

Anything else you want to know about me, ask and I might tell you.

Welcome to the madness.

Please treat this place with the same respect that you would expect your space to be treated.

Thank you.

Artist's Toolbox

dickblick.com

Dick Blick is THE best online store that I have found to date for ordering supplies online. They have great discounts on many supplies. If you are fortunate enough to have a Dick Blick store in your area, that's the best place to go to get things like Strathmore paper pads, which are best picked out in person. But for Prismacolor pencils, buying online is easily the cheapest way to go if you buy a lot of pencils like I do.

Prismacolor Art Stix

These are a wonderful tool to use, especially if you have to lay down large amounts of color. The drawback is that they only make 48 colors, but the plus for figure drawing is that they do make peach. Out of a three inch stick, I have used two inches with all the drawings I have done so far this year. To put this in comparison, I would have used at least ten to fifteen pencils to do the same amount of sketches.

Derwent Watercolor Pencils

By far the best watercolor pencil that I have found, so far, Derwent's give you the ease of drawing in areas of color and, with the application of water, wonderful tonal effects that mimic traditional watercolors.

X-ACTO Magnum 1645 electric pencil sharpener

X-ACTO as a brand is really good. I highly recommend getting this particular model if possible. If it is not available, the X-ACTO Helix 1900 electric pencil sharpener is a good substitute. My Helix lasted three years before giving up earlier this year.

No matter what electric pencil sharpener you get, and I strongly recommend that you get one if you sharpen a lot of pencils, if you regularly sharpen Prismacolor or other colored pencils, get in the habit of sharpening a graphite pencil at least weekly, depending on your use level. I sharpen a graphite pencil every day, because of my use level.

Staedtler Mars Plastic Erasers

These white erasers are the BEST that I have found over time to use for erasing graphite, Prismacolor, and Derwent colored and watercolor pencils. I try to keep half a dozen on hand at all times.

Cork Bulletin Boards

Most art books recommend that you use a drawing board to draw on. I'll go one step further, and recommend that you find a cork surfaced bulletin board to use as a drawing board. The slight give of the surface works perfectly for pencil drawings. My current board is 17 X 23, with a workable surface of 15 1/2 by 21 1/2. Since I normally sketch on 9 x 12 paper, that is a good working surface.

The boards tend to run from $5 to $10, depending on where you buy them. Once the surface degrades, you can either discard the board, or you can buy cork to reapply to the board. I have a roll of cork to do just that once this board wears out, and I'll let you know how that works out.
